VISET Malta plc, operators of the Valletta Waterfront and the Valletta Sea Passenger Terminal is investing over 2 million Euros in a project to extend its primary quay.
The extension of Pinto Quay 1-2 in Valletta’s Grand Harbour will help in providing better facilities for large cruise liners.
The works which are currently ongoing and are expected to be completed by mid-April 2009, include the removal of a ro-ro ramp, excavations and dredging works on the quays and the seabed. This development will create a continuous 310-metre berth for larger vessels from the current 264-metres.
VISET Malta plc took the obligation to develop modern sea passenger facilities and embarked on an ambitious refurbishment project of the historic Pinto Stores way back in 2001. The project costing in excess of €30 million led to the realization of the Cruise Liner Passenger Terminal, a terminal offering state-of-the-art facilities, which are unique both for their location and for their historic value. Since VISET’s taking over of the actual operation in 2002, the number of cruise passengers in Valletta increased from 273,516 passengers in 2001 to around 530,000 passengers by the end of 2008.
